About Us

fb-images2BWild Safaris was established by Viv Thomé to fulfill a dream of enabling her fellow countrymen and nature-lovers from around the world to experience the pure excitement and wonder of the African bush which she has spent a life-time exploring.

Her passion for nature, the outdoors and conservation have led her to the point where she wants to educate and share with others the thrill, beauty and sheer diversity of fauna and flora to be found all over Southern Africa. Viv has lived in South Africa for most of her life apart from living in Maun, Botswana near the Okavango Delta for a short while.  She has travelled through many game reserves in South Africa and, since 2000, has been undertaking safaris and adventure trips to neighbouring countries such as Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Mocambique.

Viv has a Diploma in Managing Tourism in South Africa.  She also obtained a Certificate in Environmental Appreciation and Interpretation through the Field-Guides Association of South Africa and North West Parks & Tourism Board-approved Bushveld Mosaic Course and is an Honorary Officer of the North West Parks & Tourism Board.

In 2012, Viv met her soul-mate, John, an editor and photographer and passionate about overlanding, the great outdoors (the wilder, the better) and wildlife.  They were married in a Bushman-style ceremony in the remote Kaokoveld in Namibia.

Going back  …

Viv’s great-grandfather was friendly with Paul Kruger of Kruger National Park fame and her grandfather brought her Mom up to camp in the wild when the Kruger National Park was in its infancy.  She and her sister and two brothers were regularly taken on trips to the Kruger, her Dad being just as passionate about wildlife as her Mom’s family.  And so, they too were taught by her parents to appreciate the beauty of nature and excitement of the bush.

Viv, being the eldest, was never afraid of anything except creepy crawlies until she learned all about them.  She has always had a passion for lions and fights the fight for anything endangered or threatened.

Sister Norma usually hid on the floor of the car as she was terrified of elephants after an episode when the family vehicle was chased by an irritated bull when Norma was only a tiny tot.  She now resides in Auckland, New Zealand where she doesn’t have to worry about elephants but she just cannot wait to get back into the wild for a good safari with husband Peter.

Brother John is the photographer, video and website man of the family and he and his wife, Tina, travelled around South Africa in a campervan for a year before emigrating to Auckland, New Zealand last year.  Thank you so very much, John, for all your help with this website!

Brother Lawrence trained as a field-guide, ran a B&B in Johannesburg and worked as Shore Excursion Manager for Carnival Cruises for five years in the Caribbean and Mediterranean.  He and his wife, Jenny, have now also settled in Auckland, New Zealand.

Viv has two sons:  Donovan – married to Tracy with two grand-children, Liam and Sean;  and Jason – married to Liezl.  John also has two sons, Simon and Jonathan.  They have all experienced many bush adventures.

This undertaking is dedicated to my dearest Dad, Neville Talbot Botton (17/10/26 – 28/8/2001)

and to you, Mom, who has taught us all and enriched our lives more than you can ever know …
